Our Young Farming Champion

Sharna Holman: Our Young Farming Champion!

Sharna Holman our Young Farming Champion came to our school on Thursday 3rd August to speak to approximately 60 year 10 students about The Cotton Industry, Biosecurity and Careers in Agriculture.

The students had wonderful time both meeting Sharna and listening to her amazing presentation.

The students decided that they wanted to show Sharna that they appreciated her visit so they wrote down a few words to show their gratitude.

Connor:

On behalf of everyone here at Beaudesert State High School, we would like to say a big thank you to Sharna Holman for coming all the way from Emerald to teach us about the Cotton Industry. Thank you so much for sharing your career and experiences in the Cotton Industry with us. It really opened our minds and changed the way we thought about cotton and what is the purpose of cotton. I am sure we will definitely use this knowledge that we learnt from you in the future. We really appreciate your time that you took out for us. I wish you the best of luck for your career and future and I hope you are the inspiration for many more. Thank you.

Now that the students have shown their gratitude towards Sharna it is time that you read a little bit about this amazing young lady.

Sharna Holman is a city girl who fell in love with agriculture. She now works as a cotton extension officer in Emerald, Central Queensland, in a role that connects cotton growers and agronomists with the latest news, research and information through different ways including running and organising research trials and experiments, field walks, workshops, writing factsheets and newsletters and working with cotton growers one-on-one. By sharing the latest news, research and information, cotton growers are able to keep their farming practices up to date ensuring they use resources such as water and land to the best of its ability and the cotton they grow works with the natural environment and is great quality for the tops and jeans we wear every day.

However agriculture was once a foreign world to Sharna who grew up in the suburbs of Sydney and discovered the industry through her four hectare high school farm, volunteering and exhibiting at agricultural shows and her school’s involvement in the Archibull Prize Program. Sharna completed a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Sydney, where she quickly found out more about the Australian Cotton Industry after attending the Australian Cotton Conference – where she became hooked and amazed by the innovation and passion of the Australian cotton industry, and hasn’t looked back since!
