Bullinda Bullguard and how she got her name

As with most things, it all started with an idea.

We didn’t have the Archibull yet but we felt that we (Mrs Perkins and her year 10 Animal Husbandry class ) needed to start to come up with an appropriate name.

We had been given The Cotton Industry as our industry and we felt that is was very important to have a name that was reflective of both The Australian Cotton Industry and the Archibull.

But what could we choose?

What was a catchy, fun but appropriate name that would reflect both of these important things.

We were suggested some pretty good names to begin with……Bud, Buddy, Q-Tip, Fine Cotton etc. but they just did not seem to stick straight away.

One of the lovely ladies in the office (Mrs O’Halloran) suggested Wear-a-bull. We liked it….. We loved it!

This then lead to the next idea.

What was Mrs Perkins most favourite item of clothing which was also made from cotton?………..You guessed it…JEANS!

This is also an item of clothing choice from most of the class.

We then decided that we needed  to think a little more ‘Scientifically’ so Jeans soon became GENES.

Which lead on to the next idea……..

GMO (Genetically Modified Organism). GMO is used in cotton production- by changing the genetic make up of cotton it can produce chemicals that stop or reduce insect attack. Cool hey!

The next idea came about fairly quickly…….

Bollguard 3 (this is the name of the cotton that we grow at the moment). This particular product is genetically modified as it had 3 genes in it to reduce caterpillar attack. Awesome!

Very quickly someone in the class shouted out Bullguard! We can call it Bullguard!

Once she had arrived to our school she was yarded up in the school library to have her accustomed to the students and her new surrounds. A suggestion was then made by one of our wonderful staff members that she need a ‘little bit of femininity’ as she is a cow and not a bull.

The suggestion of giving her the first name of Bullinda was put forward.

Bullinda Bullguard sounded like a fine name for our new cow.

And this is how our Archibull got her name.
